Paris Jackson has opened up about how she manages her mental health while living under a microscope.
The 24-year-old American Horror Story actress KVD Beauty’s new face, on… said Popping Candy this week about how she copes with social pressure to somehow become a public figure.
“Recently, I’ve learned how to cope with it all by practicing self-love and affirmation and going deeper into my spiritual life,” the late Michael Jackson’s daughter explained to the press. It wasn’t until the last few years that I started feeling really good about myself and my body, feeling comfortable and everything. Those moments of self-love weren’t 24/7, but the bad ones were becoming less and less frequent.”
Jackson adds that she keeps an “open mind” not only about makeup, but “everything” in her life.
“I was raised by a free-love hippie type of guy, so we were taught that beauty comes from within,” she noted, “and to this day, I still believe that.”
Jackson has previously spoken about her struggles with mental health issues. She told Rolling Stone in 2017 that she had attempted suicide multiple times and engaged in self-harming behavior after being sexually assaulted at age 14. She sought help for her mental health issues at a treatment facility in 2019.
In 2021, she spoke with Willow Smith in the Facebook Watch series Red Table Talks about how the intense focus on the paparazzi affected her mental health and shared that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Jackson said at the time that she underwent something called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to manage it.
“I do find that it affects my personal relationships, especially romantic relationships,” she said at the time. “PTSD can affect almost every aspect of your life. I’m just starting the recovery process.”
